Diet Review: Mediterranean Diet
In 1993, the Harvard School of Public Health, the Oldways Preservation and Exchange Trust and the European Office of the World Health Organization introduced the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid as a guide to familiarize people with the most common foods of the region.
The pyramid, which is a dietary pattern rather than a strictly regimented eating plan, highlights certain foods based on the dietary traditions of Crete, Greece and southern Italy in the mid-20th century.

At the time, these countries had low rates of chronic disease and above-average adult life expectancy, despite having limited access to healthcare. Diet — mainly fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts, whole grains, sheep's milk, olive oil, small amounts of dairy products and red wine— - was believed to contribute to the health benefits. The pyramid also emphasized daily exercise and the positive social aspects of shared meals...

Reward: The Gold Medals Are Pilling Up
The Mediterranean diet ranks No. 1 on U.S. News & World Report's list of the best diets for 2023, published on January 1st, 2024. The list includes 24 diets analyzed by a panel of health experts. It is the sixth year in a row that the Mediterranean diet has topped the list.
The judges assessed each diet plan for nutritional completeness, health risks and benefits, long-term sustainability and evidence-based effectiveness. They also considered the strengths and weaknesses of each diet, as well as the specific goals that can best be achieved with each diet. The result for the best diet for 2023, which is also recommended for 2024, is the Mediterranean diet.
